# Why is There a Service Fee on a Payment

A service fee may appear during enrollment or when you review an invoice and its payment amount.

Service fees indicate that your school or daycare is passing on to you the expense they incur in processing online transactions.

We, Tuio, are not under any circumstances liable for any service fees, payment charges, surcharges, transaction fees, or fees of any nature, including in particular credit/debit card service fees or surcharges, levied on and/or charged by any merchants (e.g. the legal entity or individual you are transmitting payment to via the use of our payment service), which you are asked to pay by any such merchants ("Facility Transaction Charges").

The amount and rate of any such Facility Transaction Charges are determined by the merchants alone.

**Note:** parents are always welcome to [share their feedback](http://tuiopay.com) on service fees, but it's important to understand that TUIO does not determine if a service fee is applied. What TUIO does do, however, is show you transparent pricing information at the time of setup, allowing you to choose your preferred payment method.

### Check the fee before paying

Review the amount breakdown and the fee shown for the payment method you select. When other methods are available, review their displayed totals before choosing. Do not assume a fee is the same for every school, program or payment method.

### Questions about a fee

Contact your school or daycare about its fee policy, the amount charged, or available payment options. Include the invoice number and the fee label shown in TUIO. If you need help finding the breakdown or understanding a technical payment result, contact TUIO support.

A service fee for a payment and a fee related to a failed or returned bank payment are different charges. Ask about the specific fee shown rather than assuming the same policy or rate applies to both.

### NSF fees for a failed bank payment

NSF means non-sufficient funds. Whether your school charges you an NSF fee depends on its own policies and discretion. Contact your school to confirm whether a fee applies to you and how much it is.
